Overview
After the construction of the four Takao-class ships, under the terms of the London Naval Treaty, Japan could no longer build cruisers with 203 mm guns. However, the country still had the right to build cruisers with guns up to 155 mm in caliber. The next fleet replenishment program included four cruisers with 155 mm guns in five triple turrets. The design was intended to allow the replacement of these turrets with twin turrets mounting 203 mm guns. The lead ship of the class, Mogami, was built in Kure. During the Fourth Fleet Incident, the ship sustained damage from a typhoon, leading to an unscheduled repair. During World War II, the cruiser participated in the occupation of Indochina, the invasions of Malaya, Sarawak, and Indonesia, and the battles in the Sunda Strait, at Midway, and in the Philippine Sea. During the Battle of Leyte Gulf on October 25, 1944, Mogami was heavily damaged by American torpedo bombers and finished off by the Japanese destroyer Akebono.
