Overview
Atago, a Takao-class cruiser, was built in Kure. Upon commissioning, the ship was assigned to the 4th Cruiser Division. During World War II, it supported landings during the invasions of Malaya and the Philippines, participated in the Battle of the Java Sea, the Battle of the Eastern Solomons, the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands, the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal, and the Battle of the Philippine Sea. From July 1944, the cruiser served as the flagship of Admiral Takeo Kurita's 1st Mobile Strike Force. Atago was sunk by the submarine USS Darter during the Battle of Leyte Gulf on October 23, 1944.
