Overview

Tirpitz, the second Bismarck-class battleship, was built in Wilhelmshaven. After sea trials, the battleship became the flagship of a temporary Baltic squadron covering Operation Barbarossa from the sea. In January 1942, Tirpitz moved to Trondheim, Norway, to attack northern convoys. However, due to fuel shortages and fear of losing another battleship after Bismarck's loss, the ship's activity remained low for the rest of the war. In March 1942, Tirpitz attempted to attack convoy PQ-12 but was itself attacked by British carrier aircraft and withdrew. In June, the battleship sortied from Altafjord to intercept convoy PQ-17 but was detected and attacked by the Soviet submarine K-21. In September 1943, the battleship participated in the landing on Spitsbergen, and upon return was attacked by British mini-submarines, sustaining serious damage. The ship was repeatedly attacked by British aircraft and was sunk by Lancaster bombers on November 12, 1944.
