Overview

In 1932, the German navy began conceptual studies for a 35,000-ton battleship project. The basis for the future ship was a World War I-era battlecruiser project laid down in July 1916. To select optimal armament, protection, and speed, variants with different armament and armor were studied. Simultaneously, the German naval leadership ascertained Great Britain's position regarding Germany's entry into the system of international naval treaties. At that time, Britain was inclined to reduce the maximum battleship caliber to 305 mm, so such guns were considered as the main ones for the future German ship. Moreover, such a caliber suggested maximally balanced armor for the planned displacement. However, France laid down the Dunkerque battlecruiser with 330 mm guns, so Germany abandoned the idea of a battleship with 305 mm artillery.
