Overview
In the early 1930s, the Directorate of the RKKA Navy held a number of meetings with shipbuilders from different countries to find an optimal technical solution for future Soviet ships. In 1935, negotiations began with the Italian shipyard Odero Terni Orlando regarding the construction of a destroyer leader in Italy. Such a ship was to serve as a prototype for serial construction at Soviet shipyards. In February 1936, the shipyard presented the ship project, which received the index 20I. The ship, named 'Tashkent', was built at the shipyard in Livorno. In early 1941, the 130 mm twin B-2LM mounts provided for by the project were installed on the ship. During the Great Patriotic War, 'Tashkent' participated in the defense of Odessa and then Sevastopol, becoming the last ship to break through to the besieged city. Upon return, the leader was heavily damaged and, while preparing for the passage to the repair site in Poti, was sunk on July 2, 1942, by a direct hit from a German aerial bomb.
