Overview
In 1955–56, assignments were approved for the conversion of Project 30-bis destroyers into radio intelligence ships. These ships were to conduct radio reconnaissance, radar, and jamming in the interests of the formation. The project included the installation of ZIF-71 anti-aircraft guns with radar guidance, two RBU-2500, as well as radio reconnaissance and radar equipment. In 1958–60, eight Project 30-bis destroyers were modernized. 'Ognenny' was built in Molotovsk at plant No. 402 as a Project 30-bis destroyer. From 1950 to 1963, it was part of the Northern Fleet. In 1958–60, it was modernized under Project 31 as a radio intelligence ship. In 1963–64, it served in the Black Sea Fleet, and from 1968 — the Baltic Fleet. In 1971, it performed combat missions, providing assistance to the Egyptian Navy.
