Overview
According to the initial plan for the war against Great Britain, the main striking force of the raider formations was to be twelve P-class cruisers. However, in early 1938, the German command decided that it was necessary to support its raiders with full-fledged battlecruisers with heavy guns. The hull of the new project ship was enlarged to accommodate three gun mounts, and the gun caliber was increased to 380 mm. The fully diesel power plant was replaced by a combined one. In August 1939, the first ship of this type out of three planned was ordered from the Germaniawerft shipyard. However, the laying down of none of the battlecruisers took place due to an acute shortage of materials, which with the start of World War II went primarily to the construction of submarines.
