Overview
After the denunciation of the Versailles Treaty and the signing of the Anglo-German Naval Agreement, the German Naval Staff decided to further develop the Deutschland-type ships. In 1937, several preliminary draft projects designated 'Cruiser P' were considered, and in 1938, the construction of such ships was included in the German fleet modernization program. The raider cruisers were to cut off Great Britain from its sources of supply and raw materials. More than twenty variants of preliminary draft projects were considered. The ship's speed remained one of the most difficult issues. To achieve the required characteristics, it was possible to reduce the main gun caliber to the 'Washington' 203 mm. The optimal option would have been the placement of three triple turrets. Of the twelve ordered ships, not one was built due to the start of World War II.
