Overview
Shinonome, a Fubuki-class destroyer, was built in Sasebo. Upon commissioning, the ship was assigned to the Imperial Japanese Navy's 12th Destroyer Division. During the Second Sino-Japanese War, it patrolled the coast. In World War II, the destroyer participated in the invasion of French Indochina, covered the Japanese troop landings at Kota Bharu in Malaya and the Borneo landings. Shinonome was sunk on December 17, 1941, off the coast of Sarawak by two bombs from a Dornier Do 24 flying boat, which detonated the aft magazines.
