Overview
A lighter version of the Fubuki-class destroyer, constructed with extensive use of welding and stronger grades of steel. The ship represented an attempt to create a destroyer that complied with the limitations of the London Naval Treaty while not being inferior to its predecessors in combat capabilities. The Hatsuharu-class destroyers initially had a classic turret arrangement but later underwent radical modernization. The ships' displacement increased and their speed decreased, but the risk of capsizing was reduced. The lead ship of the class, Hatsuharu, was built in Sasebo. The destroyer participated in World War II: it covered landings in the Dutch East Indies and took part in the Aleutian Islands campaign. In October 1942, the ship was damaged by an aerial bomb and spent a year under repair. In 1944, it participated in the Battle of Leyte Gulf. The destroyer Hatsuharu was sunk by American bombers in Manila Bay on November 13, 1944.
