Overview

In 1922, Japan signed the Washington Naval Treaty, which limited the total tonnage of battleships and aircraft carriers. However, the restrictions did not apply to ships with a displacement of up to 10,000 tons. In October 1922, the technical design for a destroyer with a displacement of 2000 tons was created. During its development, the displacement was reduced to 1900 tons, while the caliber of the main artillery was increased and a third torpedo launcher was added. As a result, the destroyers possessed outstanding specific combat power, but this came at the cost of significant construction overload and poor stability. The lead ship of the class, Fubuki, was built in Maizuru. During World War II, the destroyer covered Japanese landings in French Indochina, Malaya, and the Dutch East Indies, participated in the Battle of the Sunda Strait and the Battle of Midway. Fubuki was sunk by artillery fire from American cruisers and destroyers in the Battle of Cape Esperance on October 11, 1942.
