Overview
During the interwar period, naval rivalry among the South American powers continued. In the 1920s and 1930s, the Argentine Navy was significantly strengthened: first, three cruisers were ordered, followed by seven fleet destroyers. The constructed destroyers were similar to the British Gallant type and were named after Argentine provinces. The lead ship of the class, Buenos Aires, was built at the Vickers-Armstrong shipyard in Barrow-in-Furness. After commissioning, the ship joined the 1st Destroyer Squadron. In 1955, Buenos Aires participated in the uprising against the dictatorship of President Juan Domingo Perón.
