Overview
In 1927, the Chilean government signed a contract with the British firm Thornycroft for the construction of six destroyers. The designers based their work on the destroyer Amazon, previously built for the British Royal Navy, removed one of its guns, and reduced the hull size. The lead ship of the class, Serrano, was built at Thornycroft's shipyard in Southampton. The ship's service was uneventful, as the Chilean government maintained neutrality during the Second World War.
