Overview
In 1915, it became clear that the war was dragging on, and Germany needed to build new ships to replace losses. Kaiser Wilhelm insisted that the new ships be armed with 380 mm guns and combine the speed of a battlecruiser with the armor of a battleship. The lead ship of the series was laid down in July 1916, and in August, the designs were presented. The final version was a Mackensen enlarged by 2,500 tons with eight 380 mm guns. The end of the war changed German naval commanders' views on strategy, and all efforts were directed towards the construction and repair of submarines. The laid-down ship was dismantled on the slipway after the war.
