Overview
Under the 1939 Japanese fleet expansion program, it was planned to build two cruisers intended to serve as submarine squadron leaders. The requirements for the cruisers included powerful communication equipment and the capability to carry a group of high-speed seaplanes. The hull of such a ship was developed based on the Agano-class cruiser, and two main battery turrets were borrowed from the refitting of the Mogami-class cruisers. The cruiser Ōyodo was built in Kure. As part of the Third Fleet, the ship participated in the campaigns of 1943. Serving as the flagship of the Combined Fleet, Ōyodo took part in the Battle off Cape Engaño in October 1944. In the spring of 1945, the ship was damaged by American bombers in Kure and was sunk on July 28 in Etajima as a result of several near-miss bomb explosions.
