Overview
In 1936, the second London Conference was held in Great Britain, during which it was proposed to reduce the main caliber of battleships laid down after the start of negotiations to 356 mm. However, due to the refusal of Japan and Italy to sign the agreement, the other participating countries decided to increase the maximum size of guns on ships to 406 mm. The battleship USS North Carolina was laid down in 1937 and commissioned during World War II. After a brief service in the Atlantic, the ship was transferred to the Pacific Ocean, where it took part in the Guadalcanal campaign in 1942. Later, it served in convoy escort, participated in the Battle of the Solomon Islands and the Gilbert-Marshall Islands operation. In 1944, the battleship took part in the Mariana Islands campaign, the Battle of the Philippine Sea, the landings in the Philippines, and the landing on Okinawa. During World War II, the ship received 12 battle stars.
