Overview
The inaugural series of a new generation of American battleships which began to be designed in the mid-1930s. Their primary advantage over "conventional" battleships lay in their significantly enhanced speed and more potent air-defense systems. During World WarĀ II, USSĀ North Carolina played an active role in Pacific Ocean operations, participating in engagements such as the Battle of the Eastern Solomons, the Battle of the Philippine Sea, and the Okinawa landings. During the course of the war, the ship was awarded 12 battle stars.
