Overview
The USS Washington, the second battleship of the North Carolina class, was built at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard. In the first months after commissioning, the ship operated off the U.S. Atlantic coast. Following Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor, it was dispatched to Great Britain to reinforce the Home Fleet. In the summer of 1942, after a brief refit, the battleship was transferred to the Pacific Ocean, where the Guadalcanal Campaign was already underway. On the night of November 14-15, 1942, the Washington participated in the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal, where it inflicted severe damage on the Japanese battleship Kirishima. Beginning in 1943, the ship provided cover for the fast carrier task force and participated in various operations: the capture of the Gilbert and Marshall Islands, the Mariana and Palau Islands campaign, and the landings in the Philippines, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa. In 1946, the Washington participated in the repatriation of American troops from Europe.
