Overview
In 1911, when information about the construction of the Japanese Kongō-class ships appeared, the US Navy leadership realized the need to build a battlecruiser. At the time of construction, the Lexington-class battleships were the largest warships ever built in the US. They were armed with eight 406 mm guns in four twin turrets. USS Constellation was laid down in August 1920. The order for its construction was canceled three years later, following the Washington Naval Conference decision.
