Overview
USS Milwaukee (CL-5), the second of ten Omaha-class cruisers, was built in Tacoma, Washington. From 1928, the cruiser served in the U.S. Pacific Fleet and then in the Caribbean Patrol. After the U.S. entered World War II, the ship became the flagship of the 2nd Cruiser Division and operated in the Atlantic Ocean, escorting convoys and conducting patrol operations. In April 1944, the cruiser was transferred to the USSR Navy, where it was renamed 'Murmansk.' Until the end of the war, the ship participated in convoy cover, and in March 1949, it was returned to the U.S.
