Overview
In April 1932, the first operational-technical assignment for a light cruiser was approved in the USSR. In the summer of the same year, a Soviet commission was sent to Italy to familiarize itself with the Italian shipbuilding industry, select a prototype for the new Soviet cruiser, and purchase a boiler-turbine power plant. In March 1933, a revised version of the operational-technical assignment was approved, and in April, the preliminary design of the cruiser was ready. The first variant of the project proposed armament of six 180 mm guns. In the course of further development and evolution of this project, Project 26 cruisers appeared.
