Overview
HMS Aurora, a British Arethusa-class light cruiser, was built in Portsmouth in 1935–37. During World War II, the ship participated in the Norwegian Campaign and the hunt for Bismarck, intercepted Italian convoys in the Mediterranean, covered Allied landings in Africa, Sicily, and Southern France. In May 1948, the cruiser was transferred to the Navy of the Republic of China as compensation for ships seized by Britain in Hong Kong and lost during the war. The ship was named Chungking and became the flagship of the Chinese Navy. In February 1949, the cruiser and its entire crew defected to the Communist Party of China, but a month later it was sunk by Kuomintang aircraft. After the civil war ended, the ship was raised. There were plans for its repair and modernization with Soviet assistance, but they were never realized.
