Overview
The Montana-class was planned as a successor to the Iowa-class battleships. The project envisaged twelve 406 mm guns in four triple turrets. Preliminary design work began even before the US entered World War II. The attack on Pearl Harbor delayed the construction of battleships, and the success of aircraft carriers at Coral Sea and Midway led the US Navy to abandon the Montana-class in favor of aircraft carriers, amphibious, and anti-submarine ships.
