Overview
In 1937, the leadership of the USSR Navy adjusted Project 26 cruiser. The improved Project 26-bis received a modified superstructure, enhanced armor, and a new fire control system. The changes were also implemented on ships already under construction. The cruiser 'Molotov' was laid down in January 1937 and built in Nikolaev. In the first months of the Great Patriotic War, the ship participated in repelling air attacks on Sevastopol, then took part in the Kerch landing operation and the defense of Sevastopol. In August 1942, 'Molotov' was hit by a torpedo from a German aircraft—the explosion tore off the stern along with the steering compartment and rudder. 'Molotov' was towed to Poti, where it was repaired using a floating dock, utilizing the stern from an unfinished cruiser. After the war, the ship was part of the Black Sea Fleet.
