Overview
The new destroyer project proposed increasing the number of torpedo tubes to three, which was a compromise option to avoid excessive hull widening and reduced maximum speed. At the start of World War II, USS Mahan participated in covering carrier groups during raids on the Marshall Islands. The destroyer participated in the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands and the New Guinea campaign, providing support for the landing on New Britain. Mahan was heavily damaged as a result of a kamikaze attack in Leyte Gulf on December 7, 1944.
