Overview
This destroyer was laid down in the United Kingdom as HMS Sentinel but was renamed Scorpion in honor of a lost gunboat before its launch. After commissioning, the ship joined the 23rd Destroyer Flotilla. From 1943 to 1945, the ship participated in escorting Arctic convoys. As part of the escort for the battleship Duke of York, the destroyer fought in the Battle of North Cape, where Scharnhorst was sunk. In June 1944, HMS Scorpion provided cover for the Allied landings in Normandy. After the end of World War II, the ship was sold to the Netherlands, where it was renamed Kortenaer.
