Overview

The Kolberg type became the first series of German cruisers in which all ships were equipped with turbines. These cruisers were larger than their predecessors and had higher speed and seaworthiness, carrying more guns. SMS Kolberg was built in Danzig at the Schichau shipyard. Before World War I, the cruiser participated in reviews and exercises, often escorting Kaiser Wilhelm's yacht. With the start of the war, the ship participated in raids on Yarmouth and Scarborough, fought in the Battle of Dogger Bank in January 1915, and in August of the same year, together with the main fleet forces, attempted to break into the Gulf of Riga. In 1917, Kolberg repeated the breakthrough attempt in Operation Albion, this time successfully. After World War I, the ship was transferred to France, where it entered service in 1922 under the name Colmar. In French service, the ship participated mainly in colonial campaigns.
