Overview
Under the 1937 and 1939 fleet replenishment programs, training cruisers were built, designed to replace old armored cruisers from the Russo-Japanese War era. These ships had a mixed propulsion system, as well as a diverse set of armaments: 140 mm main guns, dual-purpose 127 mm guns, 25 mm anti-aircraft autocannons, 533 mm torpedoes, and a catapult with a seaplane. This variety was necessary for training cadets. Katori was built in Yokohama. During World War II, the ship was primarily used as the flagship of the Sixth Fleet. Katori was sunk by the battleship Iowa's gunfire during the Japanese evacuation from Truk Atoll on February 18, 1944.
