Overview
The project of a 'squadron reconnaissance cruiser' appeared in 1897-98. The ships, intended for the Pacific Squadron, were to surpass Japanese armored cruisers in speed and combat power. 'Bogatyr' was laid down in Stettin in December 1899 and launched in January 1901. The cruiser joined the ranks of the Pacific Squadron and was included in the Vladivostok Cruiser Detachment. In May 1904, the ship was damaged on rocks in Amur Bay and stood in repair throughout the war. After the Russo-Japanese War, 'Bogatyr' was transferred to the Baltic Fleet, as part of which it actively participated in World War I. In 1918, it participated in the Ice Cruise of the fleet from Helsingfors.
