Overview
'Aurora,' the third cruiser of the 'Diana' class, was built at the New Admiralty shipyard in St. Petersburg. In 1904-05, the ship moved to the Far East and participated in the Battle of Tsushima, where the cruiser's commander was killed. After the Russo-Japanese War, 'Aurora' returned to the Baltic. During World War I, it actively participated in naval combat operations, including the defense of the Gulf of Riga. During the October Revolution in 1917, after a blank shot from 'Aurora's' gun, the assault on the Winter Palace began. The cruiser's radio station transmitted the appeal 'To the Citizens of Russia!', written by V. I. Lenin. During the Great Patriotic War, 'Aurora' defended Kronstadt, and in September 1941, the ship was damaged by aerial bombing and grounded. In 1945, 'Aurora' was raised and converted first into a base for the Nakhimov School and then into a museum ship.
