Overview
Japan's refusal to sign the Second London Naval Treaty in 1937 removed all tonnage restrictions for Japanese warships. Consequently, the Imperial Japanese Navy General Staff prepared requirements for a new destroyer: improved stability and increased range compared to preceding ships of this class while retaining their armament. Welding was extensively used in the construction. The lead ship of the class, Kagerō, was built in Maizuru. During World War II, the destroyer fought in the battles of the Eastern Solomons, the Santa Cruz Islands, Guadalcanal, and Tassafaronga. The destroyer Kagerō was damaged by a naval mine near Vila port in the Solomon Islands on May 7, 1943, was nearly immobilized, and was destroyed a short time later by aircraft.
