Overview
The second pair of Vittorio Veneto-class battleships was built under the 1938 program. These ships featured a raised forecastle deck for better seakeeping. The fourth battleship Impero was laid down at Ansaldo shipyards in Genoa in May 1938. Launched November 1939 but unfinished due to WWII. Towed to Brindisi in June 1940 where engines and some AA guns were installed. 28% complete when work stopped in 1942. Moved to Venice then Trieste in 1942. After Italy's 1943 surrender, the incomplete ship was captured by Germans, bombed by Allies, and sank. Raised and scrapped in Venice 1947.
