Overview
In August 1942, the People's Commissar of the Navy, Admiral N. G. Kuznetsov, approved the operational-tactical assignment for the project of a large destroyer for ocean service, which was to become the successor to Project 35. The project received the number 40. In 1943-44, specialists from the NTC Navy and TsKB-17 performed preliminary studies, and in 1944, the assignment was clarified. A total of 6 preliminary variants of Project 40 were completed. One of them, authored by engineer V. Nikitin, was brought to the stage of a preliminary design under the index 40N. In the summer of 1945, it was decided to build 132 large destroyers over ten years, but already in the fall, their construction was abandoned in favor of light cruisers and simple destroyers.
