Overview
The third 'pocket battleship' of the Deutschland class was built in Wilhelmshaven. Admiral Graf Spee differed from its two predecessors in larger size and improved armor. Immediately after entering service, the ship became the flagship of the German fleet. At the start of World War II, Admiral Graf Spee set off on its first and last raid into the Atlantic. From September to December, it managed to capture and sink several British merchant ships. In December 1939, the ship encountered the British cruisers Exeter, Ajax, and Achilles in the Battle of the River Plate, heavily damaging the first and inflicting damage on the others. The 'pocket battleship' itself was also damaged and headed to Montevideo for repairs. Britain transmitted disinformation by radio: it was reported that Admiral Graf Spee would be met by British battlecruisers and aircraft carriers upon exiting the port. After consulting with Berlin, the 'pocket battleship's' commander, Hans Langsdorff, ordered the ship scuttled, which was done on December 17, 1939.
