Overview
The last of the Alaska-class cruisers in a command ship configuration with dual-purpose 127 mm main battery guns. The hull of the third ship of the series, Hawaii, remained unfinished for years after her launch in 1945. In the early 1950s, one option considered was a project to complete the cruiser as a large command ship with fully replaced armament—her main battery would have consisted of the newest dual-purpose 127 mm Mark 18 guns. However, the project was canceled in 1953, and the cruiser was scrapped a few years later.
