Overview
The Yūgumo-class destroyers were built to an improved design based on the Kagerō class. They differed from their predecessors primarily in their new type of gun mount. The lead ship of the class, Yūgumo, was built in Maizuru. During World War II, the destroyer fought at the Battle of Midway, the Eastern Solomons, and the Santa Cruz Islands, and delivered reinforcements to Guadalcanal. In 1943, the ship was primarily engaged in troop evacuations — from the Aleutians to the Solomons. The destroyer Yūgumo was sunk by American destroyers near Vella Lavella Island on October 7, 1943.
