Overview
After the experimental destroyer Shimakaze was laid down in 1941, intended to mark a new milestone in Japanese shipbuilding, 16 ships of this type were included in the fleet replenishment program. However, the heavy losses inflicted by American aviation in 1942 forced Japan to revise the program and replace some of these ships with Akizuki-class destroyers. In October 1943, seven ships based on an improved design of the Akizuki class were ordered. In May of the following year, their construction was canceled, as the fleet required mass-produced and inexpensive ships for convoy escort, not expensive and time-consuming destroyers. Subsequently, the resources intended for these destroyers were used in the construction of Tachibana-class escort destroyers and Kaibōkan — Japanese escort ships.
