Overview
The Yorktown-class aircraft carriers were superior to their predecessor, Ranger, with a larger air group, decent armor, and torpedo protection. The lead ship of the Yorktown class was built at the Newport News Shipyard. During the Battle of the Coral Sea in May 1942, aircraft from the Yorktown sank the light aircraft carrier Shōhō and damaged the Shōkaku. In the process, the Yorktown itself sustained serious damage. Later, the carrier participated in the Battle of Midway Atoll. In June 1942, Japanese torpedo bombers hit Yorktown with two torpedoes, causing the carrier to lose power and list to port. The captain ordered the crew to abandon ship, but Yorktown did not sink. Towing of the aircraft carrier began, but the Japanese submarine I-168 hit it with a torpedo salvo. Salvage efforts were unsuccessful, and on June 7, the ship sank.
