Overview
USS Enterprise, the second Yorktown-class aircraft carrier, was built in Newport News, Virginia. From 1939, the ship served in the Pacific Ocean, based at Pearl Harbor. During the Japanese attack on the port, the carrier was transporting Marine Corps aircraft to Wake Island. In 1942, Enterprise participated in raids on the Marshall Islands and then took part in the famous Doolittle Raid. In June, the ship fought at Midway — aircraft from Enterprise disabled the Japanese carriers Kaga and Akagi and sank the cruiser Mikuma. In September, Enterprise participated in the Battle of Santa Cruz, and then in the Battle of Guadalcanal, where it helped sink the battleship Hiei. In 1943–44, the ship participated in most campaigns in the Pacific. In June 1944, the carrier took part in the Battle of the Philippine Sea, and in October — in the Battle of Leyte Gulf. In 1945, Enterprise covered the landings on Iwo Jima and Okinawa. During its service, the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise received 20 battle stars, becoming the most decorated ship of the US Navy in World War II.
