Overview
In 1943, at the height of World War II, Admiral Ernest King demanded the construction of two light aircraft carriers per year to compensate for expected losses. The first two ships were to be commissioned in December 1945. To simplify design and construction, the new carriers were based on the hull of the Baltimore-class heavy cruiser. USS Saipan was built in Camden, New Jersey. Until 1957, the carrier, which was too small for jet aircraft, was used for training maneuvers, patrol and diplomatic missions, as well as for training Navy cadets. In the mid-1960s, Saipan became a communications relay ship and was renamed USS Arlington. In 1967, the ship was deployed to Vietnam, where it served until 1968. The ship participated in the Apollo program as a search and rescue vessel.
