Overview
As a result of World War I, Germany signed the Treaty of Versailles, significantly limiting its armed forces. According to the treaty, Germany was allowed to have six old battleships of the Deutschland and Braunschweig types in its fleet, which upon reaching their maximum age could be replaced by ships with a displacement of no more than 10,000 tons each. In the 1920s, the naval leadership initiated a series of studies on future ships to replace the old battleships. Several options were proposed, including Entwurf I/10, which had armament of eight 8-inch guns in four turrets and was close to 'Washington' cruisers. The project was not realized, and its further development led to the appearance of 'pocket battleships'.
