Overview
The German fleet modernization plan envisaged thirteen light cruisers in service, six of which had already been built by the start of 1939. Six cruisers built to an improved design were to be added to them: they were to differ from previous types in improved range and higher speed. In 1938–39, six ships were ordered, two of which were laid down in Kiel and Wilhelmshaven in 1938. In September 1939, the construction of the ships was canceled due to the start of World War II, and the laid-down cruisers were dismantled on the slipway.
