Overview
The Fidonisi-class destroyers were a development of the Derzkiy-class destroyers for the Black Sea. They differed from their predecessors in enhanced armament and triple torpedo tubes. The destroyer Levkas was laid down in May 1916 in Nikolayev, and in October 1917 the ship was launched. In an incomplete state, it was captured by Austro-German occupiers, forces of the Central Rada, Greco-Anglo-French occupiers, Green Army members, and White Guards. The destroyer, renamed Shaumian, was completed in 1923–25 and joined the Black Sea Naval Forces. During the Great Patriotic War, it participated in the defense of Odessa and Sevastopol, the Kerch-Feodosia and Sudak landing operations. In April 1942, while transitioning from Novorossiysk to Poti, Shaumian ran aground near Gelendzhik. The ship could not be refloated, and soon the destroyer was wrecked due to bad weather and German bombardments.
