Overview
Taking into account the experience of battles in the Pacific Ocean in 1942, the US Navy began designing an aircraft carrier with an armored hangar and flight deck. Among the requirements for the new ships was protection against 203-mm shells from Japanese heavy cruisers and 610-mm torpedoes. USS Midway was built at the Newport News shipyard (Virginia) and was commissioned eight days after the end of World War II. Until 1955, this aircraft carrier was the largest ship in the world. In 1947–55, the carrier was engaged in training and patrol missions, and also took part in fleet maneuvers. In 1965–66, Midway participated in the Vietnam War, striking targets deep inside Vietnamese territory. In 1991, the aircraft carrier took part in Operation Desert Storm. In 2004, USS Midway took its place in San Diego, California, as a museum ship.
