Overview
The battleship Impero was laid down in 1938 but was never completed due to World War II. By 1942 when construction halted, the ship was 28% complete (88% hull, 76% propulsion). In the early 1940s, Italian naval leadership considered completing Impero as an aircraft carrier. The project was abandoned due to cost, shipyard workload, and later Italy's withdrawal from the war. The hull was eventually captured by German forces.
