Overview

The next stage in the development of German light cruisers was the appearance of an armor belt. It first appeared on the Magdeburg-class cruisers and was subsequently installed on all German ships of this class. The pinnacle of development for German light cruisers at the start of World War I was the Königsberg class. Structurally, it repeated previous types but had increased displacement and improved seaworthiness. The new ships received names in honor of cruisers already lost in the war. SMS Karlsruhe was built in Kiel. After mandatory crew training, the cruiser joined the 2nd Scouting Squadron, which patrolled the German Bight. The ship performed reconnaissance duties and escorted minesweepers. In the autumn of 1917, Karlsruhe participated in Operation Albion—an attempt to break into the Gulf of Riga. After Germany's capitulation, the cruiser was transferred to Scapa Flow, where it was scuttled by its own crew on June 21, 1919.
