Overview
The design of battleships that met the requirements of the Washington Naval Treaty began in the late 1920s and early 1930s in Italy. The resulting project was a ship with a displacement of 35,000Ā tons and armament of nine 381Ā mm guns. Vittorio Veneto was laid down in 1934 and entered service six years later. During World WarĀ II, the battleship participated in operations in the Mediterranean Sea, in the Battles of Cape Teulada and Cape Matapan, and intercepted Maltese convoys of the British fleet.
