Overview
Yahagi, an Agano-class cruiser, was built in Sasebo. As the flagship of a combined destroyer division, the ship participated in the Battle of the Philippine Sea in June 1944, providing cover for the 1st Carrier Striking Force. The cruiser took part in the Battle of Leyte Gulf, again leading a combined destroyer division. During an attack by American forces near Okinawa on April 7, 1945, Yahagi sustained numerous torpedo and bomb hits, lost propulsion, and sank.
