Overview
In the Japanese Navy of the 1910s, destroyers were divided into Class I and Class II. The latter were significantly smaller and cheaper, meaning they could be built in larger numbers. The last of these small destroyers were the Wakatake-class ships, built between 1921 and 1923. These ships were an enlarged version of the preceding Momi-class. The destroyer Wakatake was built in Kobe at the Kawasaki shipyard. The ship participated in the Second Sino-Japanese War, patrolling the Chinese coast. During World War II, it served as an escort vessel. The ship was sunk during an Allied air raid on Palau on March 30, 1944.
