Overview

News of the increase in caliber on British dreadnoughts prompted the US Navy to consider arming its newest battleships with ten 356-mm guns. The first prototype of such a ship, equipped with triple-expansion steam engines, was tested as early as 1910. Four years later, the battleship USS New York, built on this principle, entered service. Immediately after commissioning, the ship participated in the American occupation of Veracruz during the Mexican Revolution. During World War I, the battleship served as the flagship of the 9th Division, and in 1919 it was transferred to the Pacific Ocean, where it served until the mid-1930s. In 1939, the New York took part in the "Neutrality Patrol," and during World War II it escorted convoys, covered troop landings in North Africa, and supported the landings on Iwo Jima and Okinawa. During World War II, the ship earned three battle stars. In 1946, the battleship participated in Operation Crossroads, nuclear tests at Bikini Atoll, and was sunk in 1948.
